Your First Fertility Visit, Walked Through Step by Step

Booking your first fertility acupuncture appointment can feel like one more unknown in a process that already has plenty of them. Maybe you've been trying for a while, maybe you're just starting to explore your options alongside a fertility clinic, or maybe a friend or your OBGYN suggested our clinic, and you're not quite sure what you're walking into. Here's exactly what happens at East Bay Acupuncture in Oakland, from the moment you book to the plan you'll leave with.

Before you even arrive

After you schedule your first appointment with us, you'll receive online intake forms to fill out covering your cycle history, any current or past fertility treatment (IUI, IVF, or trying at home), relevant medical history, and recent fertility lab work. Our detailed paperwork helps us prepare for our first session with you so we can ask thoughtful questions.

If you're already working with a reproductive endocrinologist or OB/GYN, bring or send over any recent labs and tests (AMH, FSH, thyroid panel, HSG, AFC) if you have them. You don't need lab work to get started, but they can help us tailor your treatment plan. If you’re about to or have already gone through an egg retrieval, we’d love to see your protocol, report, and labs drawn throughout the process. These give us important insight into what your RE is thinking and how to best support you as common side effects come up with certain medications.

The First 60 Minutes of your consultation

Listening to your story. Your first visit with one of our board-certified fertility acupuncturists starts with an invitation to share your fertility story up until now and your family-building goals and dreams.

Gathering information through a detailed intake go over your intake forms and fill in the blanks with thoughtful questions to learn about your reproductive health and general health history. We will go through your cycle in detail: length, regularity, flow, PMS symptoms. We also want to know about your sleep, digestion, stress levels, and anything else relevant to your overall health. In Chinese medicine, fertility isn't treated as an isolated issue; it's connected to how your whole system is functioning, so we're listening for patterns and ways we can optimize your health and, in turn, optimize your fertility.

We always leave time for you to ask questions. We are your partners in this process, and we want you to understand our process. We love sharing Chinese medicine philosophy with patients, so we welcome your curiosity!

Pulse and tongue diagnosis. We'll check your pulse on your wrist and look at your tongue. These are two of the primary diagnostic tools in TCM. These give us information about your underlying pattern (for example, Kidney deficiency, Blood deficiency, Blood stasis, or Liver Qi stagnation) that guides which points and, if applicable, which herbal formula we recommend.

The treatment itself. Once we've gathered all of the information we need, you'll have your first acupuncture treatment, which typically lasts 30 minutes. This is time for you to rest, and many people fall asleep. Fertility protocols often use points on your abdomen, arms, legs, and sometimes your back and ears, selected based on where you are in your cycle and what your pattern calls for.

Your treatment plan. You'll leave with a sense of what your fertility treatment plan looks like going forward, including how often we recommend coming in, whether we're timing sessions around a natural cycle or an IUI/IVF protocol. We’ll set you up for future appointments, and within 24-48 hours, you’ll receive your official treatment plan and recommendations via our EHR portal, including treatment goals and recommendations on fertility-friendly diet, supplements, herbal medicine, and lifestyle to support your treatments and goals.

What Acupuncture Actually Feels Like

The most common question we get is “Does acupuncture hurt?” Most patients are surprised by how gentle and relaxing acupuncture sessions can be. There are many different techniques when it comes to acupuncture, but the good news is that fertility acupuncture doesn't need to hurt. We offer a gentle approach with hair-thin needles, and most sensations range from nothing at all to a brief, dull ache when a point is activated. Any mild sensations go away after a few seconds. If you're anxious about needles, just let us know, and we will make sure to go at your pace so you can feel comfortable throughout the experience.

How Often You'll Need to Come In

Your plan will depend on your specific situation. If you're trying to conceive naturally, we typically recommend weekly treatment for at least three full menstrual cycles before reassessing. If you're in an IUI or IVF cycle, we plan sessions around your protocol. For IVF specifically, we see you twice weekly leading up to retrieval and transfer. Special treatments before and after embryo transfer are the most researched application of acupuncture in fertility care. We'll talk through the recommended cadence for your situation at the end of your first visit, because consistency is genuinely part of what makes acupuncture effective here. Acupuncture has a cumulative effect, so weekly treatments leading up to your conception make the most impact.
